Training Report: “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Justice”

On Wednesday, March 18, and Thursday, March 19, a two-day online training session titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Justice” was held, organized by the Athens Lifelong Learning Institute with the support of the University of the Aegean and ITML.

On the first day, the discussion began with an introduction to the current state of Artificial Intelligence in the field of Justice, the challenges we face, and the ethical issues that arise. In addition, the FAIR-PReSONS project was officially presented.

On the second day, participants were shown how AI is used in legal practice, and the first presentation of the FAIR-PReSONS digital tool took place. This was followed by a detailed discussion of the legal and ethical issues surrounding the use of the tool for predicting recidivism, how personal characteristics influence predictions, and what the international and European frameworks stipulate.

Upon completion of the training, participants filled out an evaluation form, which recorded a generally positive response. Ratings for the organization and the speakers’ preparation were very high. The trainees found the content and case studies to be clear, understandable, and relevant to their professional needs. The variety of topics, as well as the time allocated for discussion and questions, were also positively evaluated.

Overall, the training achieved its objective. Participants reported that their expectations were fully met and that they now feel better prepared to use AI tools in their daily work responsibly and safely. Upon completion of the training, certificates of participation were issued to all attendees.

The FAIR-PReSONS project is implemented under the European JUSTICE program.
